Terms of service
These terms apply when you use the Expensed app. They set out in plain language what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you.
Last updated: [Date]
Template - needs legal review. This document matches how the app is built, but no lawyer has read it. Complete every section marked [Requires legal review] or holding a [placeholder], and check it against the jurisdictions you operate in, before launch.
Agreement
Installing or using Expensed means you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the app. [Legal entity name] ("we", "us") publishes it.
Licence to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use Expensed on devices you own or control, for your own use. You may not copy, sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute it, or attempt to derive its source code, except where the law forbids that restriction.
Your responsibility for your records
Expensed records the information you give it. Checking that your transactions are correct is your responsibility, including anything read from a scanned receipt. Read what the app produced, and correct what is wrong.
Not financial, tax, accounting or legal advice
Expensed gives no financial, tax, accounting or legal advice. Its totals, categories and reports summarise the data you entered. Check them yourself, or take professional advice, before using them for tax filings, statutory reporting or any other regulated purpose.
Limitations of on-device processing
Receipt scanning and transaction extraction run on your device, on a best-effort basis. They will sometimes misread a receipt or miss information entirely, particularly a faded, damaged or unusually formatted one. Check what they produce.
These features depend on the device. They run slower on some, and not at all on devices below the requirements. Some need the on-device model downloaded before first use.
Data storage, backup and loss
Your data sits on your device. We hold no copy, so we cannot restore it. Uninstalling the app, resetting or losing the device, or a hardware fault can destroy it permanently.
Keeping a backup is your responsibility. Export your data, or enable optional backup to your own iCloud or Google Drive account. We are not responsible for data that was never backed up or exported.
Paid features
Core expense tracking is free. Optional paid features are offered as Premium Lifetime, priced at [Price], One-time purchase. No subscription.. [Placeholder: final price.]
The app shows the price before purchase. Prices change over time, but a change never affects a purchase already made.
App Store and Google Play terms
The Apple App Store and Google Play distribute the app, and their terms apply alongside these. Apple and Google handle purchases, refunds and restores under their own policies. A purchase on one platform stays there.
Apple is not a party to these terms and owes you no support for the app. [Requires legal review: include the current Apple "Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement" terms required by App Store Review, including the third-party beneficiary clause.]
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the app for any unlawful purpose, including recording or disguising illegal activity.
- Interfere with, disrupt or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the app or related systems.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or modify the app, except where the law expressly permits it.
- Use the app in a way that infringes someone else's rights.
Intellectual property
We own the app, its name, design and content. You own what you enter: nothing here gives us any claim over your transactions, notes or receipts.
Warranty disclaimer
The app comes "as is" and "as available". So far as the law permits, we disclaim every warranty, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement. We do not promise that the app will run uninterrupted or error-free, or that extraction will be accurate. [Requires legal review: consumer law in many countries limits how far warranties can be disclaimed; adjust for each market.]
Limitation of liability
So far as the law permits, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost data, lost profit, or any loss arising from reliance on what the app produced. Our total liability is limited to what you paid for the app in the [period, for example 12 months] before the claim. [Requires legal review: some liability cannot be excluded, including for death, personal injury or fraud.]
Termination
Stop using the app and uninstall it whenever you like. We may end your licence if you breach these terms. Ending it leaves the data on your device untouched, still yours to export or delete.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the app changes, and will publish the new version here with a new date. Using the app after a change means you accept it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [Country / state], and disputes will be handled by the courts of [jurisdiction]. [Requires legal review: consumer protection rules may give users the right to bring a claim in their own country regardless of this clause.]
